The plan to construct a Sh30billion Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mombasa has received a major boost after the government said it plans to connect electricity to the site.

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) has proposed to build power supply lines to the zone which is in Mtongwe, Likoni constituency.

In its proposal, which is awaiting a nod from the National Environment Management Authority (Nema), Ketraco wants to build a 53km transmission line from Mariakani to Dongo Kundu.

The project will comprise development of a 220kV overhead double circuit transmission line supported by steel –lattice type transmission towers from Mariakani substation to the Mombasa SEZ.

Inside the economic zone there will be a substation which will consist of transformers, a control building and access road.

Yesterday, in an advert Nema published a notice seeking public views on the project within 30 days before it gives Ketraco a clean bill of health to continue with it plans.

The development comes few weeks after residents who will be affected by the project gave their blessings and asked for speedy compensation.
