Three governors in Nyanza and Western regions have dropped their deputies ahead of the August 8 elections.

Cornel Rasanga (Siaya), Jack Ranguma (Kisumu) and Moses Akaranga (Vihiga) have axed Ouma Onyango, Ruth Odinga, and Caleb Amaswache respectively.

Even though Mr Ranguma has not publicly unveiled his running mate, it will not be Ms Odinga because the governor will be fighting to retain his seat as an independent candidate while his deputy still belongs in ODM.

Ms Odinga’s bid to deputise Kisumu ODM governor nominee, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, were shattered when the senator picked Dr Mathews Owili for the post. Mr Rasanga defended his move to replace Mr Onyango with James Ouko Okumbe saying: “It is my prerogative as a governor to choose whoever I want to be my running mate.”

He went on: “When you are driving a car you engage the gears from number one then you move gradually to gear two. I was in gear two with Mr Onyango and now I have moved to gear three with Mr Okumbe.”
