Kenya Airways has introduced direct flights to Nigerian capital Abuja, positioning it for a bigger share of passengers flying in and out of Africa’s second biggest economy.

The airline will start flights to Nigeria’s administrative capital in June with four trips a week.

Kenya Airways (KQ) already operates 10 flights to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, seven of which are direct and three through neighbouring cities.

“This is in line with our long-term growth strategy, through which we aim to fly to every African capital by 2016,” said KQ’s chief executive, Titus Naikuni.

The introduction of flights to Abuja follows a review of Bilateral Service Agreements by Kenyan and Nigerian governments last year.

Abuja is the seat of the Federal Government as well as the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) and other major national and regional organisations.

KQ is eyeing a larger share of the African passengers market in line with its growth strategy of connecting African cities to the rest of the world through its Nairobi hub.

The continent accounts for 52 per cent of the airline’s turnover with West Africa being one of the high-yield regions.

It flies to over 40 destinations on the continent but faces major competition from Ethiopian Airlines and Middle Eastern carriers.
