Electricity generator KenGen has won the Africa Energy Company award for 2014/15 which featured firms in the continent that are involved in development of renewable power projects.
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) beat Umeme of Uganda, Electricity Company of Ghana Limited, Nigeria’s Niger Delta Power Holding Company Ltd and Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited to clinch the award.
The company’s Olkaria geothermal steam generation project was also ranked Africa’s clean energy project of the year. Kenya was ranked eighth globally in the steam energy production category.
“KenGen is proud to be on the lead in moving the country towards self-sufficiency and providing reliable, affordable and renewable energy,” said KenGen managing director and chief executive Albert Mugo after receiving the award.
The African Utility Week and Clean Power Africa event in Cape Town seeks to recognise outstanding utility companies in the continent. The event is organised annually by Spintelligent, a leading trade, exhibition and conference organiser based in Cape Town in partnership with UK-based Clarion Events Ltd’s Africa office. “These prestigious industry awards welcomed 700 of Africa’s most distinguished power and water industry professionals to recognise those that represent a benchmark of excellence for the industry,” said Clarion communications manager AnnieMarie Roodbol.
