Restaurants, supermarkets and cafes in Nairobi are set to pay double for their food hygiene licences if amendments to a county proposed law are passed.

Amendments proposed to the Nairobi City County Finance Bill, 2015 will see most establishments pay more for the annual licences.

Supermarkets which currently pay Sh10,000 for these licences will now pay Sh20,000. For the large retail stores that have more than 100 employees will part with Sh60,000 annually. Restaurants paying Sh5,000 will pay 200 per cent more to Sh15,000 while cafes on Sh5,000 rate will double the figure.

The changes have been proposed by Michael Ogada, the Budget and Appropriations committee chairman.

Outside catering services will cost Sh7,000 for a hygiene permit while eating houses that serve fish and chips will see their licence cost rise from Sh5,000 to Sh7,000.
City Hall has also reversed a decision to lower land rates.

Boost collections

The county had initially reduced land rates from 34 per cent of the undeveloped plot value to 25 per cent. The status quo will remain.

Nairobi collected Sh2.5 billion in land rates in the year ended June. A recent judgment that Karen and Lang’ata residents should pay rates to City Hall has been seen as a boost to collections expected this year.

It will cost less to get a burial permit with the amendments reducing this amount from Sh1,000 to Sh500.

The changes are meant to see City Hall collect more beyond the Sh11.5 billion collected last year in revenues.
