The Central Organisation of Trade Union (Cotu) board Monday ousted deputy secretary-general George Muchai over what it called poor work ethics.

The board, which met at the Lake Bogoria Spa Resort, unanimously voted to suspend Mr Muchai from office with immediate effect for allegedly breaching Cotu’s constitution by acting contrary to the requirements of his office.

At the same time, the board confirmed the new National Hospital Insurance Fund rates that were agreed upon during a recent meeting between Cotu and NHIF’s top management.

Mr Muchai, who is also the MP for Kabete, was replaced with Benson Okwaro who will immediately take over the office in an acting capacity until May 2016 when the governing council reviews the position.

Addressing the Press after the meeting, the board meeting chaired by Cotu secretary-general Francis Atwoli accused Mr Muchai of engaging in partisan politics and undermining the interests of workers.

“This board worked very hard to ensure that we had two representatives in Parliament and through our efforts Mr Muchai captured the Kabete seat only for him to start undermining the board and the secretary-general’s office,” said Mr Atwoli.

He said out of the 28 board members, 26 attended yesterday’s meeting and agreed to relieve Mr Muchai of his duties at the union.
