  • Mr Mohamud's visit comes at the time when Kenya is planning to repatriate the refugees at the Dadaab camp to their country amid calls from the Somali government and other international bodies urging the State to back down on the move.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made a maiden visit to Dadaab refugee camp on Monday, becoming the first Head of State from the neighbouring country to tour the facility that holds more than 300,000 people from the horn of Africa state.

Mr Mohamud's visit comes at the time when Kenya is planning to repatriate the refugees at the Dadaab camp to their country amid calls from the Somali government and other international bodies urging the State to back down on the move.

On Tuesday, the visiting head met with President Uhuru Kenyatta where they held bilateral talks at State House, Nairobi.

The talks between the two Presidents focused on issues that included the decision to close the Dadaab refugee camp, trade issues including rules affecting aviation between Kenya and Somalia, and cooperation on security.

The two leaders will hold a second round of talks at State House on Wednesday.

Kenya has remained adamant and last month said repatriation of refugees to their home countries or third party nations had started.

“The decision was arrived at in 2013 when Kenya, Somalia and UN refugee agency (UNHCR) signed a tripartite agreement setting grounds for repatriation of refugees. There has been slow progress in implementation of the agreement,” said Mr Nkaissery said in an earlier briefing.
