Teachers biggest winners in Sh2.62 trillion budget

  • The Teachers Service Commission has been allocated Sh201 billion.

Teachers are the single-biggest winners of the Sh2.62 trillion budget that the Treasury tabled in Parliament last evening.

The Teachers Service Commission has been allocated Sh201 billion to run its activities. The Infrastructure and Transport ministries also got big allocations of Sh187 billion and Sh102 billion respectively.

The money will be spent on among others, improvement of roads, railways, airports and sea ports.
The Interior and the Defence dockets have been allocated Sh125.4 billion and Sh103.6 billion respectively.
The huge allocation will go towards provisions of security as the country heads to the General Election and the fight against terror.

Kenya in 2011 deployed its soldiers to Somalia to fight the Al-Shabaab militants following incessant attacks and kidnapping of foreign tourists and aid workers. The Treasury has allocated itself Sh122.7 billion while the Energy ministry has received Sh77.2 billion in the budget that was tabled in the National Assembly by Majority leader Aden Duale.

Part of the Treasury allocations will go towards financing constituency development projects under the National Government Constituencies Development Fund while the Energy budget will be used for power generation and electricity supply.

The Ministry of Health has been allocated Sh61.1 billion up from Sh60.2 billion. Of the amount, Sh6.9 billion has been set aside for compensation of employees and Sh16.1 billion as capital transfers to other government entities including Level 5 hospitals.

Public hospitals

The Health ministry is currently in a crisis following 74 days of doctor’s strike that has paralysed services in all public hospitals.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission budget has been enhanced by Sh2 billion to cater for the August 7 polls.

The commission has been allocated Sh21.4 billion up from Sh19.3 billion in the current financial year.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will get Sh19.7 billion out of which Sh1.5 billion will go towards coordination of State protocol.

The bulk of the Sh1.5 billion will be used to cater for the preparations for the transition after the August election in the event of inauguration of a new president or reelection of the current Head of State.
