GM holds 36pc local market share

General Motors East Africa (GMEA’s) market share crossed the 30 per cent mark last month, extending its lead position over its top rivals Toyota Kenya and DT Dobie.

GMEA boosted its market share to 36.3 per cent last month, having recorded 389 unit sales. The dealer is local franchisee for Isuzu and Chevrolet brands.

Toyota sold 197 units in April clocking a market share of 23.1 per cent in the year to date. Simba Corporation, which sells Mitsubishi trucks and BMW cars, sold 151 units last month to take its market share to date to 16 per cent.

CMC Holdings sold 79 units in the month riding on the popularity of its Ford pick-ups to take its share to 7.7 per cent.

Crown Motors sold 30 units in the month, with its market share standing at 3.9 per cent. DT Dobie whose loss of the Nissan franchise to rival Crown saw its market share decline in recent times sold 49 units in April to record a market share of 3.7 per cent to date.

The dealer, which sells Mercedes cars and trucks, is betting on its recent acquisition of the Greatwall and Volkswagen dealerships to grow sales in the coming years.
