Meat prices have a hit a new high on reduced supply tied to drought as households continue to enjoy cheap vegetables.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) data show a kilogramme of beef with bones on average retailed at Sh420 last month up from Sh406 — a historic high.
Dealers at Dagoretti, Limuru and Kitengela abattoirs cited scarcity of cattle for the price change amid rise in demand.
Poor rainfall in major cattle-producing areas has led to death of livestock following a drought that left about 2.7 million people in need of food aid.
The dry spell also saw farmers selling their cows at throw-away prices in a rush to mitigate the losses they would incur in the event of mass deaths.
But homes are enjoying a drop in vegetable prices. KNBS data show a kilo of sukuma wiki retailed at Sh41.48 last month down from Sh42.19 in August and Sh62.90 in April.
