The 2011 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam results will be released next Wednesday, the examinations body announced on Wednesday.

Knec directed all provincial directors of education to pick the results on the date.

“The Kenya National Examinations Council wishes to inform the general public that the 2011 KCPE examination results will be released on Wednesday 28 December 2011,” the Education ministry said in a notice on Wednesday.

The results will be released via text messages in which candidates will be required to send their index numbers to the number 55052. The exams will also be available on the ministry website.

The examinations body will once again come under scrutiny over the use of technology to deliver results following jamming, caused by anxious candidates logging on to the system at once, caused delays over the last two years.

“There is nothing we can do since there is normally too much traffic when everyone tries to get their results jamming the system and causing the website to dysfunction,” said Knec public relations officer Frida Were.

The education ministry cautioned parents and candidates to avoid sending more than one text messages to avoid jamming the system.

Last year, the ministry came under criticism as it tried to use an SMS notification system alongside real-time reporting on its website to deliver results to over 700,000 KCPE candidates.

A total of 775,000 candidates sat for KCPE examinations this year. Ms Were said that about two thirds of the candidates have access to mobile phones or the internet.

Last week the ministry published new guidelines on admission to secondary schools after the government increased Form One places to absorb the growing number of pupils.

Education minister Sam Ongeri will issue a statement on the finalised guidelines when he launches Form One selection in January.

He said that the ministry had collected data on schools’ capacities and was planning to launch 30 new national schools.

A further 57 schools will be added in the second and third phases of the expansion.

Research by the ministry on the quality of free primary education found out that the number of pupils who repeated classes had dropped from 55.7 per cent to 48.2 per cent between 2005 and 2010.

There was also a decline in the number of pupils receiving extra tuition except in Nyanza province over the same period.
