The launch of the new English language title for the city dweller covers interesting aspects of life in the capital, including County Hall news, crime and courts, business, entertainment and sports.

It also offers a diverse range of business and leisure information to make life easier and more enjoyable in the city.

The Nation Media Group, publishers of the Daily Nation and Sunday Nation, runs 11 newspapers in eastern Africa, along with television and radio stations as well as news and commercial websites.

According to the Group CEO, Mr Linus Gitahi, Nairobi News is a response to the growth of a news market created by devolution and seeks to benefit from the Kenyan capital’s robust economy, which produces nearly 60 per cent of the country’s GDP.

“This newspaper will not be driven by the politics of who-said-what or which VIP did what, but, rather, will capture the drama and significance of life in Kenya’s capital. Politics will be covered with the aim of keeping readers informed of decisions and plans which affect residents’ lives,” Mr Gitahi said.

“It will provide information through advertising and listings to enable readers make practical decisions, such as which plot or house to buy, cars for sale, restaurants and job vacancies and which schools to take your child to.”

A key element of Nairobi News is a companion website — which underlines the Digital First strategy behind its approach to news coverage. All its news will be broken first on mobile phone and on a dynamic news website.

The next day’s newspaper will carry updated and more detailed versions of the story, plus a host of other exclusive news reports, features, commentaries and general information.

Among the subject areas the newspaper will regularly cover will be personal health, fitness, money-making ideas and domestic issues for the young family.

Said Group Editorial Director Joseph Odindo: “Nairobi has become virtually a state within a state. We have created a newspaper which is interesting and easy to read without being salacious and downmarket.”

‘‘It is a newspaper that addresses the reading needs of time-pressed city dwellers. It will also provide a platform for advertisers seeking to reach the city consumer at a cost lower than the national newspaper rates,’’ he added.

Nairobi News targets a core readership of city dwellers aged between 24–35 year whose economic and social life is city-based.

The paper, which will cost Sh40, will initially come out thrice a week—Monday, Wednesday and Friday—but from January will be published daily.

Dr Kidero welcomed the birth of media that would promote the city’s development and champion the interests of the residents.
