Eldoret North MP William Ruto and radio presenter Joshua Sang will stand trial in March next year for crimes against humanity following the 2007 General Election.

The trial date will come soon after the 2013 General Election set for March 4 in what analysts say will help cool down political temperatures in the country.

“It is a good a thing since it will help to cool political temperatures in the run-up to elections,” said the head of trading at Old Mutual Securities Alstair Gould.

The exact date of the trial at the Hague, however, will be set before the International Criminal Court (ICC) summer recess that will start on July 13.

“The chamber will be making an order on the trial date and also the timetable for the disclosure by the time we take the summer recess,” Judge Kuniko Ozaki said.

Lawyers for Uhuru Kenyatta, who is also charged with crimes against humanity, will meet the prosecution and the judges on Tuesday during a status conference where the date for his trial will also be set.

The proceedings were being presided over by Judge Kuniko Ozaki from Japan. The other Judges in the case are Chile Eboe-Osuji and Christine Van den Wyngaert.

The prosecution promised the ICC judges that they would finish disclosing the evidence against Mr Ruto, a presidential candidate, and Mr Sang by the end of March 2013.

The trial date leaves the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) with the task of deciding whether Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto should run for the presidency in view of the charges and the provisions on integrity in the Constitution.
