Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) is diversifying its marketing approach to bring in more visitors through attractions outside the traditional beach and game variety.

Cultural tourism, sports tourism, hosted buyer events and investment forums are the new avenues the board is pursuing.

“We have a lot of things that are unique to Kenya only. We have animal species only found in the country, the sights and sounds, the landscape and scenery and of course the hospitable nature of the people,” said Mr Muriithi Ndegwa, managing director, KTB.

Some of the events held by the board this year to drive traffic to new tourist areas are International Camel derby tour and Samburu traditional wedding and Lamu cultural event.

KTB last month sponsored the derby to the tune of Sh700,000 in a bid to open up the Northern Kenya tourism circuit to the world.

The Investment forum in London during the just concluded London Olympics, another new initiative, won pledges of Sh4.7 billion for investment across various sectors of the economy.

On Thursday last week the board flagged off 21 actors, singers and instrumentalist for a three month European tour, which aims to market Kenya’s diverse culture through musicals.

The group made up of known and upcoming stars from the local entertainment industry, will conduct performances dubbed “Out of Africa; the magic of Kenya.”

The performances which have already recorded 100 pre-booked shows in Benelux and Scandinavia tell the story of Kenya, from the Arab trade years to date.

“We decided to use the youth in this particular initiative so that we can show Kenya’s vibrant future,” said Mr Ndegwa.

Some of the artists are former project fame finalists Amelina Mwenesi and Patricia Kihoro.
