At least four out of 150 schools will by close of the week receive free laptops under the Digital Literacy Programme in a pilot process that kicked off Tuesday.

Class One pupils at Ilbissil Boarding Primary School, Kajiado were the first to receive the laptops. Katheka AIC in Machakos, Sharki Primary in Mombasa and Hill Primary in Eldoret are set to receive the devices Thursday and Friday.

ICT secretary Joe Mucheru said that 10,000 devices had been released for the pilot expected to run until end of next month.

“Our transition rate has been very slow because pupils opt for academies with ICT infrastructure. With the digital literacy programme, this will now be a thing of the past,” Ilbissil head-teacher Nicholas Muriu said in a statement. It is a Sh17 billion project.
