President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday warned that public transport investors would face the full force of the law if their vehicles cause avoidable accidents.

The outraged Head of State spoke in Mombasa as it emerged 41 people had died in a road accident involving a bus on the Narok-Mai Mahiu road.

“For years, when accidents occur only drivers faced the law. But from now action will be taken against the vehicle owners too,” he warned.

“The transporters of passengers must be held responsible for accidents as they mind more about money in their pockets than lives lost.”

He said the bus and matatu owners were partly to blame for the rising incidence of road accidents on the country’s roads.

Mr Kenyatta noted that most of the accidents occur due to reckless driving. “All road users must exercise discipline while driving to overcome more loss of life,” he said.

Before the president unveiled the controversial 60,000 title deeds at State House Thursday, he told Coast leaders and government officials to observe a minute of silence in remembrance of the people who lost their lives at Ntulele, Narok.

He said the main cause of accidents was lack of discipline among drivers. The President ordered traffic police to enforce the law to contain road carnage.

“Traffic police must enforce the traffic rules to bring sanity on our roads. Road carnage must end,” the president added.
