EDITORIAL: CA probe plan proper

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has taken the right path in seeking to hire a firm to investigate alleged malpractices in employment and staff promotions at the State agency.

That the authority’s director-general, Francis Wangusi, has been sent on mandatory leave by the board over the allegations, it can only be fair that the audit is done independently and free from interference.

The process should be done professionally and without undue influence from political or other players.

As it is, there are already questions on why other senior officials, who likely would have been involved in hiring decisions, have not been sent home as well.

To assure independence and show a sense of fairness, the review should target not just Mr Wangusi, but all others involved. In absence of such, the exercise risks being seen as a witch-hunt, especially now that it’s coming just months after a General Election.

In any case, given that the alleged malpractices cover a span of three years, such a view— questioning why the allegations are only being addressed at this point — would not be far-fetched.

Ultimately, the matter needs to be resolved, to verify that the CA has the optimal employment base in compliance with the set standards, and check whether funds have been prudently used.
