EDITORIAL: Curb cereals wastage

Adopt proper planning and storage mechanisms. FILE PHOTO | NMG

It is a shame that a State agency responsible for the country’s strategic food reserves would allow hundreds of bags of maize to be attacked by weevils.

A Voi court last week ordered the management of the National Cereals and Produce Board depot in the town to fumigate its stores after 200 bags of maize were found to be infested by weevils.

The county’s public health department had sought the orders following what it termed as a severe attack on the cereals stored at the government stores.

It defeats common sense for a government body to keep maize in its stores for so long until it gets infested yet we have food deficient areas in the country where such cereals would be of great use as donations instead of being allowed to go to waste.

Time has come to ensure that once the cereals are delivered to the respective depots they are not kept in the stores for long. The solution lies in the adoption of proper planning and storage mechanisms.
