EDITORIAL: Forest agency purge timely

The broom that swept away complacent Kenya Forest Service officials should not be thrown away just yet as it may soon be required to deepen the change.

It is shameful for those charged with conserving the country’s resources to sleep on the job as crafty loggers destroy the nation’s tree cover, which was last estimated at 5.3 per cent against the recommended 10 per cent.

Coming after a debilitating drought that forced the Kenya Red Cross to fish out their begging bowl for food aid, incoming officials must be held to account for every single tree under their watch.

The increasing number of rivers whose volume of water has been dropping by the day due to depletion of forest cover, particularly in the Mau Complex and Mount Kenya, should be a wake-up call as this portends a threat to the country’s very existence.

Nature is very unforgiving when human activities mess with the way systems are supposed to operate.

Demand for timber and settlement space must not be the two factors that will send this country down the drain.

We hope that the management changes at the forest service are not a cosmetic exercise.
