EDITORIAL: Product recall timely

Reports that a peanut butter brand has been removed from local supermarket shelves for contamination with cancer-causing aflatoxin is a step in the right direction.

We welcome the step by the Health Ministry to withdraw the brand in order to facilitate further tests.

According to the ministry, the affected Nuteez brand that has been withdrawn had exceeded by more than double the set aflatoxin standard.

The withdrawn product will be sampled and submitted to the laboratory for analysis to ensure safety. The safety of all consumers is paramount and should always supersede everything else. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Even as we welcome the latest step, we urge all government agencies to be extra cautious when inspecting consumer goods.

We need to entrench a culture where the consumer trusts each and every commodity that is being offered for sale.

To achieve that, there must be mechanisms to ensure that each product that is sold to consumers undergoes stringent checks to guarantee quality.

That is the only way to protect consumers from harm.
