For several years now, Kenyan tea farmers have incurred loses due to bad weather, low yields, drought, frost, pests and diseases that have conspired to reduce their output and earnings from the cash crop.
The farmers have often challenged agricultural research institutes to come up with new varieties of the crop that can withstand frost, pests and diseases.
