The East African Community has entered into partnership with commercial banks to develop products for collecting custom taxes at first ports of entry in a pilot scheme that could ultimately see the members share money raised from customs.

The system, which is based on a model developed by TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) will initially be applied by Tanzania Revenue Authority at the port of Dar Es Salaam that handles imports to landlocked cities of Kigali and Bujumbura up to the end of this month before being replicated at the Mombasa Port.
