Liquid Telecom to connect home web users

Liquid Telecom is set to start home Internet connections on its fibre optic network, stepping up market share battle for customers seeking fast-speed links.

Liquid Telecom becomes the latest entrant in this market segment, currently controlled by Jamii Telecoms with 80,000 fibre-to-the-homespasses (ready infrastructure that connect homes to the fibre), and follows the footsteps of MultiChoice Africa, owner of DStv that two weeks ago announced a similar strategy.

Thursday, Liquid – which has mainly concentrated in the wholesale Internet market by selling Internet bandwidth to corporates firms—announced that it has contracted Alcatel –Lucent to upgrade its network in Kenya and Uganda to enable it reach new markets such as homes and small businesses.

“The upgrades will enable Liquid Telecom to add capacity needed to meet the demand for broadband services, as well as address new markets and business opportunities,” Ben Roberts, Group CTO of Liquid Telecom said in a statement.

“The technology will be used to provide the home and small office markets with high-speed Internet services.”
