Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria risks being jailed after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ordered the filing of an application in court to withdraw a Sh2 million bond granted to the lawmaker in a hate speech case.

DPP Keriako Tobiko said the case will be filed under a certificate of urgency to cancel the bond following harsh remarks the MP made recently.

In a letter to National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) chairman Francis ole Kaparo, Mr Tobiko said investigations had also been launched into the MP over the remarks. Senior Assistant DPP Leonard Maingi has been put on the case.

Panga-wielding youths

Mr Kuria, who was grilled at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for four hours Thursday, is alleged to have told panga-wielding youths in Kiambu two weeks ago to fight those criticising National Youth Service projects.

The MP was last year charged with incitement to violence and ethnic hatred but was released on a Sh2 million cash bail.

Speaking at NCIC offices on Thursday, Mr Kaparo said the commission would step up pressure to “tame” the MP for repeatedly making hate remarks in public. He said he would lobby President Uhuru Kenyatta and all concerned State agencies for action to be taken against the MP.

The commission has already written to Mr Tobiko, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro to investigate the MP over the remarks.

On Wednesday, Mr Kuria said he was angry at the time he made the remarks and did not intend to incite his constituents.

“He (Mr Kuria) has not apologised because at the end of the so called apology he said he had no regrets, what happened was a botched PR stunt,” Mr Kaparo said at Nation FM Thursday morning.
