What you need to know:

  • Diani beach in the South Coast was ranked seventh in TripAdvisor's list of top 25 best beaches in Africa.
  • The ranking, which is expected to boost tourism in the South Coast, is seen as a demonstration that travellers have confidence in Kenyan tourism products.
  • Some of the top hotels on Diani Beach include Leopard Beach Hotel, Southern Palm Beach and Diani Reef Beach Resort.

Diani beach in Kwale County has been voted seventh best in Africa in 2017 by an American travel website, TripAdvisor.

The popular 10-kilometre white sandy beach in the South Coast was ranked seventh in the list of top 25 best beaches in Africa.

Seychelles had six beaches rated among the top 25 in Africa while South Africa and Mauritius had five beaches each in the list.

Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers Coast (KAHC) executive officer Sam Ikwaye said the ranking would boost tourism in the South Coast.

He added that the rating was a demonstration that travellers have confidence in Kenyan tourism products.

“There is need for aggressive marketing for both local and international tourists to come in droves to enjoy our alluring beaches at the Coast,” he said.

Some of the top hotels on Diani Beach include Leopard Beach Hotel, Southern Palm Beach and Diani Reef Beach Resort—which recently spent Sh150 million on renovations and plans to open a further 100 new suites in the next two years.

The review comes as hotels in the region enjoy occupancy of between 70 and 75 per cent in the period since January, up from about 50 per cent in the same period last year and about 30 per cent in 2015.

The growth is welcome news to hoteliers who had been forced to cut jobs, slash pay and close shop following the crippling effects of several travel alerts issued in 2014 after a spate of terrorist attacks on holiday getaway towns.
