The Kenya National Library Service(KNLS) will today reopen all its 64 libraries countrywide after nearly eight months of closure to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“All the 64 KNLS libraries countrywide are set to resume normal operations. Library customers are encouraged to follow Covid-19 protocol provided for safe use of facilities and resources,” KNLS said in a notice published on local dailies.

They will operate on weekdays from 8am to 6:30pm and close at 5pm on Saturdays.

This comes as the government is set to launch a Sh250 million virtual library in June 2021.

The facility will have a 15 million publications capacity as well as contain 600,000 e-books, which are currently accessible offline through e-readers across 63 KNLS branches.

The two-year virtual library project is being implemented by the Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Heritage in collaboration with the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund.

Last year in November, President Kenyatta opened an ultra-modern Maktaba Kuu Building that houses KNLS headquarters.

It also houses a 500-seater gallery dubbed ‘Sanaa Centre’, which is open to local artists.

Other special features include a 300 capacity children theatre, a 50-capacity senior citizens section, and four auditoriums.
