Shiro makes her pregnancy public at party
I looked at Shiro as if she were mad and said, but I am just beginning to enjoy myself.’
I am slowly understanding why men fear marriage and relationships — they are expensive emotionally and materially.
My plans a month ago were to go upcountry on the week before Christmas so that I could sort out land issues. I had even told my mother to arrange some meetings with the local chief.
Shiro was having none of that, she told me that we need to prepare for a visit to her parents. She said I would have to buy her parents some gifts to show that “you are my man and serious.”
I must say that I feel somewhat funny about having a fight with a pregnant woman, especially since Shiro often bursts into tears. So I decided to ask my pal Shakee how to deal with the matter.
He said, “Listen man. You have to put your foot down and insist that she comes over to your place. You cannot start by being her doormat this early.”
I found the advice sensible, but hard to execute. The issue was sorted out when my mother called and said, “Josphat, the chief is waiting for you and if you do not come soon enough this matter may never be resolved. You will lose your land.” I realised that my mother had given me the right ammunition to reject going to her family. So one evening I told her, “Shiro, we need to talk about this holiday thing.” I gave her a long story about how I needed to be in the village to sort out “our” land issue and I felt that it was important that she meets my side of the family. She put up a huge fight that almost made me lose my focus, but I remembered Shakee’s advice. So I told her, “If you really are against coming to help me sort out the land issue and bond with my family, then I can go alone.”
Imagine my shock when she said, “then go since it is important to you.” “ Really?” I answered. She gave me a hard-to-read look and said, “Go and take care of your business.”
Then I asked if she would join me to Lydia’s house. Lydia, my ex-intern, was having a house warming party and had invited me over. I wanted to show her how I had progressed in matters love. I was again shocked when Shiro said, “let us go and party hard.”
Lydia has a magnificent house and was looking picture perfect with her two children. She had put together quite an array of drinks and food for us to eat.
By about 9pm, she invited a band to entertain us and I found myself having the time of my life. This is when Shiro decided to ruin my party. She told me, “Sweetie, we need to go home.”
Beginning to enjoy
I looked at her as if she were mad and said, “but I am just beginning to enjoy myself.” She responded that, “ toto is tired and I want to sleep.” Lydia happened to find us chatting and asked me what the matter was. So Shiro told her, “We want to go home since I am tired, you know how pregnancy is? “I had not told Lydia about the pregnancy so she excitedly said, “Oh my God! I could not tell. Congratulations to you both.” Then she turned to Shiro and said, “but we must toast and drink to the baby’s health. You cannot go home now, no.” She then announced to everyone the news. “Guys,” she shouted, “Jose is going to be a dad!” That put some more fire into the party and soon I lost all sense of time. At about midnight, I looked around and noticed that Shiro was nowhere to be seen so I asked Lydia where she was.
She told me, “I asked her to lie down in the guest room for a while, let me wake her up so that you guys can go home.” We drove home in complete silence. I did not know what to make of the situation. I wonder what the morning will bring. This must be the calm before the storm.
