Senators will Wednesday hold the second special sitting on the impeachment of embattled Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.

Speaker Kenneth Lusaka recalled Senators to a two-day special sitting to investigate the charges that Nairobi Ward Representatives leveled against Mr Sonko when they impeached him two weeks ago.

Some 88 out of Nairobi’s 122 MCAs voted on December 3, 2020 to impeach Mr Sonko on grounds of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, commission of crimes and lacking the mental capability to run the county government.

“On the request of the Senate Majority Leader with the support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Wednesday, December 16, 2020 and Thursday December 17, 2020 as days for Special Sittings of the Senate to investigate the proposed removal from office, by way of impeachment, of Hon Mike Mbuvi Sonko, the Governor of Nairobi City County,” Mr Lusaka said in a special issue of the Gazette Notice.

The charges facing Mr Sonko will be read in the presence of all parties and thereafter Nairobi MCAs will be given the first chance to prosecute their case before Mr Sonko makes his submissions.

Senators last Wednesday opted for a House plenary to handle Governor Sonko's impeachment after Senate Majority leader Samuel Poghisio dropped a motion that had proposed a select committee to consider the county chiefs proposed removal from office.

The Senate Business Committee had proposed that a select committee be formed to hear charges leveled against Mr Sonko in live with provisions of Section 33 of the County Government Act.
