President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday commissioned the construction of the Sh4.5 billion Makupa bridge that will offer a seamless flow of traffic in and out of Mombasa Island.

The historic Makupa Causeway will be replaced by a 450-metre long Makupa bridge whose construction begins any time after a contract was signed between China Communications Construction Company Limited and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).

KeNHA director-general Peter Mundinia awarded China Communications Construction Company the contract last month.

The British colonial government built Makupa Causeway in 1929. It is one of the links between Mombasa and the mainland, serving as the main road link between the island and the hinterland.

President Kenyatta said on Thursday while commissioning the bridge the government would continue to roll out transformative development projects across the country.

When complete in January 2022, the four-lane bridge would pave the way for the demolition of Makupa Causeway and restoration of the ecosystem in the area including the free flow of water and marine life, according to a State House tweet.

Makupa Causeway is one of the three road links between the island and mainland, the others being Nyali bridge and Kipevu Causeway.
