The number of Kenyans dying in prison hit a nine-year high last year, highlighting the persistent crises of inhuman conditions due to torture and violence within the country’s correctional facilities.

A statistical abstract by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that 210 inmates died in 2024, a figure not seen since 2015.
