What you need to know:

  • In September, the national government set aside Sh15 billion for a social housing project set to put up 13,000 housing units in the almost 650-acre neighbourhood stretching from Marigoini all the way to Viwandani.
  • NMS had announced a Mukuru informal settlement renewal programme in May with the plans focusing on water and sanitation, roads and drainage, and electrification, is already underway.

Mukuru informal settlement will be transformed into a modern settlement within a year, Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has said.

This is part of wider multibillion-shilling plan by the Major General Mohammed Badi’s team to transform Nairobi into a green, modern city of choice by upgrading all slums which make close to 60 percent of Nairobi.

The settlement – which consists of Mukuru kwa Njenga, Mukuru kwa Reuben and Mukuru Kayaba – was declared a special planning area by the county government in 2018 stopping any unplanned development in the area for two years. This was this year extended for a further year by NMS.

“Implementation of the plan is already underway. We are making all the roads, water and sewer lines, sewer lines and electricity. We hope that within a year, Mukuru slums will be a modern living estate upgraded from an informal settlement,” said Maj Gen Badi on Wednesday during an interview on Citizen TV.
