Imperial depositors seek Uhuru intervention

A group of depositors with the troubled Imperial Bank have called upon President Uhuru Kenyatta to help them access their funds from the Kenya Depositors Insurance Corporation (KDIC).

The Imperial Bank Depositors Lobby Group, who held prayers over the weekend to mark three years since the bank was placed under receivership, said Mr Kenyatta should move with speed to compel KDIC and Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to release 100 per cent of their deposits from the troubled lender.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta promised that no one will lose funds in the fallen banks. But here we are today, three years down the road with not much to show. We appeal to President Kenyatta to help us in resolving this issue,” the depositors said in a statement.

The lender collapsed three years ago after it emerged that it was operating two sets of books that cost the lender Sh45.4 billion in bad loans and customer deposits. The lender’s receivership period was extended to January 2019.
