Terumo BCT on Thursday opened its first office in Sub-Saharan Africa in Gigiri with the aim of tackling the shortage of blood donors in the country.
A Japanese blood bank firm has partnered with the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service (KNBTS) with an eye on corporate Kenya and other adults to help pump up blood donations in the country.
Terumo BCT, which is listed in a recent industry report as among the world’s top players in the blood bank market, Thursday opened its first office in Sub-Saharan Africa in Gigiri with the aim of tackling the shortage of blood donors in the country.
“The intent is to encourage first time donors to transition to regular voluntary non-remunerated blood donations and establish a stable donor pool,” said Hiroshi Nagumo, Senior Vice President, Blood Center Solutions, Terumo BCT.
KNBTS Director Josephine Githaiga said that through the partnership they will, among other things, ramp up corporate drives to increase the number of adult blood donors from the current 20 percent.
“We want to start sending updates to people when they are due for their next donation, open up centers for blood donations and be mobile throughout the country as well as do corporate donation drives,” she said.
The partnership with the firm will initially focus on Kenya before expanding to other countries in the region.
