Professionals in the livestock sector have petitioned the government to disband the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) board accusing it of failing to cushion farmers from losses due to the recent drought.

The Kenya Veterinary Association, Kenya Veterinary Paraprofessional Association and Kenya Livestock Marketing Council accused the KMC of failing to undertake the livestock off-take programme in arid and semi-arid areas.

“The government should immediately disband the Kenya Meat Commission board for continually failing to fulfill their mandate of cushioning farmers from losses by undertaking strategic off-take,” said Dr Samuel Kahariri in a petition to the Treasury.

During a protest outside the National Assembly, the three groups blamed the KMC for the current food insecurity.

“We urge the government to listen to the cry of livestock farming communities and set up a committee of stakeholders to discuss and draw a road map to reviving the KMC,” said Dr Kahariri.
