Musa Juma, who appeared before Mombasa Resident Magistrate Martin Rabera, denied the charge.

He is accused of stealing 25 pipe metal bars and two wheelbarrows on August 18 in Mazeras , Kilifi County.

The suspect had pleaded guilty to the offence but changed his mind upon hearing the prosecution state the value of goods he is said to have stolen when the facts of the case were read to him.

Two other suspects were also charged in the same court with stealing Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) property worth Sh18,000.

Matano Said and Kinyanjui Kirika on Monday denied stealing railway fence metal grill and two train wagon brake block keys and a scrap piece of railway slippers valued at Sh10,000 and Sh8,000 respectively.

The prosecution said the suspects committed the offences on August 18 and 19 at Port Reitz in Changamwe and Railway Yard in Mvita constituencies respectively.

The two suspects were released on a cash bail of Sh10,000 each.

Former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko had last year stated that vandalizing the railway line would be met with stiff penalties including up to 10 years in jail and a Sh1 million fine.

Vandals caught committing the offence would be charged under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, Mr Tobiko said at the time.

The cases will be mentioned on September 4.
