Naivas Supermarket is set to open a new outlet at Freedom Height Mall in Langata, marking the retailer’s first store in the middle-class neighbourhood.

The mall is located just opposite Uchumi #ticker:UCHM Hyper supermarket, behind 1827 Whiskey bar and lounge.

It is scheduled to start operations by May bringing to 47 the number of Naivas outlets in the country.

“We have never had a presence on Langata Road. It’s a whole new area,” said Naivas Supermarket chief operating officer Willy Kimani in an interview.

“We are mainly targeting customers along Lang’ata Road and areas such as Karen.” The store will occupy 18,000 square feet and employ about 80 locals. It will stock fast-moving goods such as packaged foods, beverages and electronics.

“The store is a bit small in size therefore it cannot stock goods such as furniture.”

Naivas’ expansion comes as a positive development in a sector that has in recent months been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

Nakumatt, until a few months ago the country’s biggest retailer, has been the worst hit. The store has been thrown out of its former spaces in Meru and Eldoret as well as Thika Road Mall, Junction, Garden City branches in Nairobi over non-payment of rent running into tens of millions of shillings.

Naivas has however opened branches at Ciata City Mall along Kiambu Road, another at the Junction of Kenyatta and Moi Avenues, and an outlet on Moi Avenue vacated by Nakumatt Holdings.
