The Nakumatt NextGen store, which occupied 60,000 square feet, was the retail chain’s 63rd store in East Africa at the time of its opening.
The Nextgen Mall has eight floors with 200 retail units over three floors, four floors of office space and one floor occupied by restaurants, lounges and a gymnasium.
The mall also hosts one of the largest food courts in Kenya occupying 15,000 square feet with 26 restaurant outlets.
NextGen Mall, located on Mombasa Road, is set to chart a new course with the entry of a new anchor retailer following the exit of Nakumatt Supermarkets.
The new retailer, Souk Bazaar, is set to open its doors to shoppers on Sunday.
The supermarket will replace troubled supermarket chain Nakumatt as the anchor tenant of the mall. Nakumatt closed its branch at the mall last month after about nine months of operations.
The entry of the new retailer gives the shopping complex a new lease of life after Nakumatt’s exit.
The move is seen as restructuring for the Nextgen mall owners, whose loss of Nakumatt could have undermined foot traffic even for other tenants.
Souk Bazaar will be a fully-fledged supermarket offering a general supply of fast moving consumer goods.
The retailer will occupy 90,000 square feet of space at the mall.

It also hosts several brands such as Dominoes and Burger King — both with a sit-in restaurant space.
The new retailer will be targeting customers from the growing neighbourhood of South B, South C and Diamond Park estates.
NextGen Mall is part of the larger NextGen Park that hosts two blocks of existing residential apartments with the third phase of residential blocks under development.
