Kenya Orient Insurance has inked a deal with Kenyan insurance aggregator Bismart to offer a mobile phone insurance cover.

The new deal will see customers pay premiums from Sh1,000 to cover their mobile phones against loss, theft and damage. The firms said the cover is available via an online platform.

The Orient mobile policy applies to genuine gadgets valued at, at least Sh10,000 but aged less than two years, for a period of one year.

“The partnership with Bismart is an important step in our innovation journey and enables us to further leverage technology in growing our domestic insurance product segment,” said Kenya Orient Insurance chief executive Muema Muindi.

Bismart managing partner Eunice Maina, said demand for more convenient and flexible ways to address their insurance needs with the mobile phone as a point of convergence has gone up.

“Today, the mobile phone has become an indispensable part of our everyday life.  We want to give mobile phone users the comfort that if anything happens to their phone, they are well covered,” said Ms Maina.

The two firms said they will also offer laptop insurance with premiums from Sh2,500 depending on the value and type of gadget.

Under the new deal, Kenya Orient will provide underwriting services while Bismart, a local startup, will manage the online platform.
