Motorists seeking to renew or apply new licences were stranded on Monday after a technical glitch affected the government online payment portal eCitizen, disrupting crucial services by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Fernando Wangila, the ICT director at NTSA, said in an interview the agency’s own digital platform known as the Transport Integrated Management System (Tims) was operational but the government’s online payment gateway, eCitizen portal, was down making it difficult for applicants to complete payments.

“The TIMs system is running, the only directly affected service is the driver’s licence as you pay through the eCitizen portal,” said Mr Wangila. “It (eCitizen portal) is supposed to be up by the end of the day.”
