Global hotel group Radisson will next year open its first residence in Nairobi’s Arboretum neighbourhood in the second quarter of 2019.

The Radisson Blu Hotel and Apartments will be the third property under the hospitality group in Nairobi, and the second under the Radisson Blu brand name.

“It is a segment which we think has growth. We see lots of opportunity in East Africa with Nairobi and Addis Ababa. Both cities can have at least five hotels from our brands,” said vice President, Business Development, Africa and Indian Ocean, Andrew McLachlan.

As at the end of 2017, the hospitality sector deviated from the poor performance witnessed in other real estate segments to record an upward trend as a result of increased demand for hotel services from both leisure and business travellers.

The increased construction and expansion activities, especially by Kenyan-based firms, were driven by the need for growth amid competition from global brands such as Marriott, Radisson, Accor, Hilton and Best Western.

“We have five brands to develop in Kenya. The city has capacity to have a Red Radisson. Nairobi is a natural space for the contemporary lifestyle brand,” Said Mr McLachlan.

According to Mr McLachlan they were exploring alternatives beyond Nairobi, with Mombasa being a focus point.

“There is opportunity along the Coast. Mombasa from a regional and domestic meetings and conferencing product. Conversion of an existing property through renovation and rebranding would be an alternative,” he said.

The Radisson Group is planning to break ground in Kampala next year and open a hotel already under construction in Juba. It is also planning to open the three new brands in Kenya, namely Red Radisson, Radisson and Radisson Collection.

Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Seychelles are cited as the hotel development hotspots in eastern Africa, accounting for 27 per cent of the pipeline projects on the continent, said The Knight Frank 2018 hotels report.
