Kenyan student developers who took part in the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition are set to know how they fared on Thursday when winners will be announced.
Entries for the 15th cycle of the $100,000 (Sh10 million) prize competition for students started in March. The global overall winner will be announced on June 1, 2018.
The Imagine Cup competition was first unveiled in 2003 and allows participants to create or join a team of up to three eligible students that come up with an original technology project.
The student developers are required to come up with “a great idea”, make a plan, build a project, and submit to stand a chance in winning the award.
“The Imagine Cup Competition is anchored on empowering young people to showcase what they have to offer to the world,” said Lilian Nganda, Communications Manager, Microsoft Sub-Sahara Africa.
This year’s Imagine Cup edition had three award categories with each representing current state of digital transformation. They include Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Mixed Reality, each representing the current state of digital transformation.
The Artificial Intelligence will take into account the best of Azure Intelligence tools and APIs while the Big data category will check best use of Azure Analytics and APIs.
The Mixed Reality category will consider best use of Windows Mixed Reality with technologies such as HoloLens, AR and VR.
Ms Nganda said Imagine Cup addresses issues on technology, education and jobs for the younger generation in a fun, positive and inspiring way. Participants also get to acquire new and critical technical, business, and team-building skills.
Since its launch, Microsoft’s Imagine Cup has inspired nearly two million student technologists from all academic backgrounds to collaborate, innovate, and showcase their technology.
