President Uhuru Kenyatta on June 1 ordered heads of procurement and accounting units in ministries, departments and State-owned firms to step aside and submit to State House information on their assets as the war on corruption intensified.

Government spokesman Erick Kiraithe said Monday the vetting of the first cohort of officers was in its final stages.

“As of today, 400 officers have been cleared to return to work… The next cohort of officers has been identified and will shortly receive the requisite details,” he said in a statement.

Mr Kenyatta’s directive came in the wake of Sh8 billion theft at the National Youth Service.

Among documents sought from the civil servants are mobile money statements, including those of spouses for the last six months as well as driving licence number.

The officers are also required to submit personal identification number, national identity card and passport numbers, email address and phone number as well as personal and company income tax returns for the past three years, among others.

“Those who will not have been cleared to return to office will be processed in line with existing law, human resource guidelines and within the tenets of the Fair Administrative Action Act,” said Mr Kiraithe.
