British High Commissioner to Kenya Nic Hailey on Monday linked politicians to the violence in Laikipia a day after gunmen wounded Italian-born conservationist Kuki Gallmann at her ranch.

Mr Hailey blamed politicians for inciting young men to invade private ranches.

A wave of violence has hit the drought-stricken Laikipia region in recent months as armed cattle-herders searching for grazing land have driven tens of thousands of cattle onto private farms and ranches.

Residents interviewed by Reuters news agency also accused local politicians of inciting the violence ahead of the August General Election for political gain by promising supporters access to private land in the region.

The invasion of the ranches and conservancies has caused diplomatic friction between Kenya and the UK.

The UK renewed calls on the Kenyan government to restore law and order in Laikipia following the killing of Tristan Voorspuy, a dual British-Kenyan national, who was shot dead at his ranch last month.

On Sunday, gunmen attacked Ms Gallmann, 73, and shot her in the stomach after ambushing the vehicle she was driving, her family said in a statement on Monday.

Ms Gallmann was on her way to inspect fresh damage to her property after invaders burned down a retreat on Saturday.

Last month, a luxury hotel was set ablaze in an arson attack.

The Gallmann family owns the 100,000-acre Laikipia Nature Conservancy where 250 Kenyans are employed at the luxury lodges, ranch, and other businesses based there.
