Cash transfer scheme to benefit 228,700 households

The number of households to be placed on the cash transfer programme has doubled to 228,700 as the government fulfils its pledges to the elderly, persons with disabilities and orphans.

Vulnerable children will get Sh8 billion and additional Sh400 million under the Presidential Secondary School Bursary Scheme for orphans, poor and bright students.

The current budget allotted the bright students Sh1.1billion. There was no provision for resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs). Sh3.2 billion has been allocated to the elderly. 29,400 households of people with extreme disabilities will get Sh770 million while other persons with disabilities with be given Sh452 million.

Albinos will for the first time be cushioned under the social protection interventions for Sh100million. Urban and food subsidy programme has been enhanced by Sh356 million.

The free primary education and school feeding programme will get Sh12.9 billion. Secondary schools have been allocated Sh22.87bilion.

Of this amount Sh20.9 billion will be spent on day secondary school education, Sh1.17 billion for bursary and Sh800 million will be used in upgrading national schools.

To ensure quality and accessible health care services, the government has set aside Sh10.6 billion in the next financial year for free maternity and dispensary services, hiring of community support staff and provision of affordable housing for health workers.

Slum areas will also benefit from new health facilities to be set up in the informal settlements in Mombasa, Kisumu and Nairobi at a cost of Sh200 million.

The Government seeks to provide 1,500 housing units for health staff at a cost of Sh1.2 billion and to hire 6,300 community nurses and 2,100 community health workers.

Free maternal health has been apportioned Sh3.8 billion while Sh700 million will go towards free access of health centres and dispensaries.

The free maternity programme took effect on June 1 following a presidential announcement on Madaraka Day. 

The initiative is bound to increase the number of women giving birth in health institutions to curb child deaths and neo-natal defects.
