Five counties defy SRC caps on monthly meeting perks

Five county assemblies defied the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) monthly sitting allowance caps and paid members above the recommended Sh80,000 in the six months to December.

Half-year data from the Controller of Budget (CoB) shows Tana River, Kakamega, Turkana, Samburu and Taita Taveta paid amounts above the recommended monthly maximum for attending committee meetings.

In July last year, the SRC abolished mileage reimbursements for MCAs, sitting allowances for plenary sessions and special responsibility perks.

“County assemblies that reported higher expenditure on committee sitting allowance than the SRC’s recommended monthly maximum were Kakamega at Sh108,172, Samburu at Sh92,372, Turkana at Sh90,505, Tana River at Sh150,558 and Taita Taveta at Sh80,969,” said CoB Agnes Odhiambo in the report.

During the period under review, MCAs in Narok did not receive any sitting allowance while their counterparts in Trans Nzoia received an average of Sh3,997 and those in Vihiga took home Sh4,145.
