Passengers travelling on Standard Gauge Rail (SGR) trains between Nairobi and Mombasa will from Tuesday start getting a 80 per cent refund on their travel ticket costs if they notify operator of their inability to catch up with the train on time.

The refunds will, however, not be issued after the journey has commenced, at intermediate or destination stations. Requests for refunds on tickets will also be rejected in cases where the documents are damaged or defaced, the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) said.

“In cases where a passenger misses to catch up with the train due to personal reasons, the operator shall deduct 20 per cent of the ticket fee (refund fee),” said KRC on its twitter account.

An economy class ticket on SGR train from Nairobi to Mombasa costs Sh700 while a first class ticket goes for Sh3, 000 meaning refunds will be Sh560 and Sh2400 respectively.

The operator has not been paying refund to tens of people who miss trains daily. The move to refund late passengers on SGR train comes barely two months after KRC introduced additional stops in Vow and Mtito Andei.
