MPs protest new Sh5,000 fee for log-in cards replacement

MPs have protested a decision by their employer, the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), to increase the cost of replacing lost chamber log-in cards to Sh5,000 up from Sh2,000.

The PSC announced to MPs on Tuesday evening that it is in the process of upgrading the chamber communication system that will see their log-in cards replaced with a more sophisticated one.

Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi in a communication said the new charge is as a result of the upgraded systems.

He however said the old cards and the new ones which MPs are expected to sign for will run concurrently until June 4, 2018 when the current ones will be phased out.

The PSC currently, through the clerks’ office charges Sh2,000 for every card lost, misplaced or damaged.

Leader of Majority Aden Duale led MPs in opposing the new rates saying the charges are exorbitant.

“I don’t want to challenge your communication because there nothing out of order. But it is very unfair for MPs to be charged Sh5,000 when the PSC has an annual budget of more than Sh26 billion,” Mr Duale said after Mr Cheboi issued a communication on the new charges.
