MPs have killed an explosive report that sought prosecution of a former Transport minister and top airport officials for exposing taxpayers to a liability of Sh17.15 billion in the award of the duty-free shops contract at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi (JKIA).
The MPs rejected the Public Investments Committee report on the special audit report of the Duty Free Shop contract between 1988 to 2015 when it was put to vote for adoption Wednesday evening.
The committee, chaired by Eldas MP Adan Keynan, had recommended that former Transport secretary Michael Kamau be held individually responsible for exposing taxpayers to Sh7.15 billion liability in the award of the duty-free shops contract at the at the JKIA.
The contract for duty free shops lease was awarded to World Duty Free Limited, company associated with controversial businessman and Goldenberg architect Kamlesh Pattni.
The PIC had also sought the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate sacked Kenya Airports Authority managing director Lucy Mbugua for her role in the contract.
PIC had further called for the EACC to hold Stephen Gichuki, a former CEO, liable for abuse of office.
