The government has declared October 10, formerly referred to as Moi Day, a public holiday following last year’s High Court ruling and plans a review the law to scrap it all together.

Moi Day was removed from the list of national holidays following the promulgation of the Constitution in August 2010.

However, Justice George Odunga in a ruling in November 2017 reinstated the holiday on grounds that its removal was in contravention of the Public Holidays Act.

Interior secretary Fred Matiang’i said on Monday the ministry would soon ask Parliament to review the law.

“The review will address all outstanding matters with respect to public holidays and embrace the spirit of the Constitution on how our heroes will be celebrated,” he said, adding that the supreme law intended all heroes to be feted on Mashujaa Day — October 20.
