Parents on Tuesday got a reprieve after the government extended registration period for all students in schools to March 31 to allow learners acquire birth certificates.
This is after it emerged that only 3.8 million students out of 11 million had been registered by yesterday’s deadline.

Education principal secretary Bellio Kipsang said in consultation with other stakeholders, the ministry had resolved to extend the data collection under the newly developed National Education Information Management System (Nemis) to accommodate learners who have not acquired birth certificates.

In a statement, Dr Kipsang said the ministry’s staff will continue working with various schools to ensure that all concerns arising from the process are adequately addressed to facilitate a smooth completion of the exercise.

“The ministry wishes to urge all stakeholders to take advantage of the extended period to ensure that data on all learners is captured,” said the PS.

On January 27, the Ministry of Education announced a three-week data collection exercise for all learners in primary and secondary schools.

Dr Kipsang said “so far, the ministry is impressed by the progress made in uploading necessary data on our learners and teaching and non-teaching staff in schools”.

“Currently the system has accurately registered 35 per cent of the total 11 million learners in primary and secondary schools,” said the PS. Dr Kipsang said the process had been slowed down because most learners do not have birth certificates that are required for registration in the new data system.

“The ministry has had fruitful discussions with the Ministry of Interior and National Co-ordination of Government on ways to fast-track the process of issuing birth certificates,” said the PS.
